Species of the Month July 2019

Grypocoris stysi

pic

A striking and distinctive true bug, Grypocoris stysi is a common species that can be found on nettles and umbellifer flower heads during June and July. The chequered pattern of light yellow-white areas and striking orange-yellow cuneus make confusion with other species unlikely. If you are unsure about identifying this species, please take a photo and get in touch with SEWBReC to confirm.

We have only 136 records of Grypocoris stysi at SEWBReC, though the species is widespread throughout south Wales. You can view the known Welsh distribution of here on Aderyn. More information is available from British Bugs.

If you spot Grypocoris stysi during July (or at any other time of year), please send us the record, ideally via our Species of the Month form on SEWBReCORD (nb. you will need to be signed into SEWBReCORD to use this link). Instructions on how to submit records are available here.
