© Graham Watkeys

One of the largest British flies, Volucella pellucens has a distinctive white band around the middle and dark patches on the wings.

This species is found throughout the SEWBReC area, but we only have less than 500 records of Volucella pellucens in our database. You can view the Welsh distribution of Large Pied Hoverfly here on Aderyn.

More information about Volucella pellucens can be found on NatureSpot and the Hoverfly Recording Scheme website.

If you spot Volucella pellucens during August (or at any other time of year), please send us the record, ideally via our Species of the Month form on SEWBReCORD (nb. you will need to be signed into SEWBReCORD to use this link). Instructions on how to submit records are available here.
