SEWBReC Gwent Biodiversity Blitz Day 2009, Solutia Reserve at Great Traston Meadows

This event was held on Saturday 25th July 2009 and organised in conjunction with Newport County Council and Gwent Wildlife Trust.

Solutia Reserve at Great Traston Meadows (ST343846 ) is owned by Solutia Ltd and managed by the Gwent Wildlife Trust. The site covers over 30 hectares in total and is notable for its grassland divided by reens (drainage ditches) which provide marshy habitats. The flora includes reeds, rushes and sedges along with drier grassland species such as meadow vetchling. Recently recorded notable species include southern marsh orchid, shrill carder bee and possible water vole, with other specialities including grass vetchling.

Thanks to all who joined our efforts to add value to this under-recorded site by coming along on the day and helping to identify the range of species which utilise it. Further information on the species recorded during this event will be available shortly.
