Ten species in the trap, this morning: Epiphyas postvittana (2), Eudonia angustea (1), Red-green Carpet (3), Common Marbled Carpet (2), Spruce Carpet (9), Black Rustic (2), Blair's Shoulder-knot (1), Green-brindled Crescent (1), Lunar Underwing (1) and Angle Shades (1). It has been the rule, this year, that the Garden Moth Survey catches (Fridays) have been consisently the lowest of the week, which has also highlighted that we seem to get the worst weather of the week on Fridays and the weekend more often than would be expected from mere coincidence alone. Anyone else noticed this?

Six species in the trap this morning - Common Marbled Carpet(2), Flounced Chestnut, Black Rustic(3), Pink-barred Sallow, Red-line Quaker(2) and Yellow-line Quaker.

Just two moths in the trap, this morning, which isn't surprising, as the temperature dropped to 1.20 C, overnight. The moths were Green-brindled Crescent (only an occasional visitor to my garden, these days) and Red-line Quaker.

I have failed to find any Horse-chestnut leaf-miner mines at recently checked sites in Gower, so still in the early stages of colonisation I guess; still only one West Glamorgan record so far. Firethorn Leaf-miner seems quite well established though, but still finding plenty of non-affected plants.
Barry StewartGower, Tue Sep 23 18:55:48 2008
A trip to Cardiff Heliport foreshore at the weekend confirmed that Coleophora silenella is managing to hang on to it's status as a welsh species, but I only found a single larval case. Also, just up the coast on the Rhumney Estuary were leaf mines of Bucculatrix maritima (first for East Glamorgan), and an as yet undetermined Scrobipalpa - most likely salinella.

On the 13th, I found a Poplar Hawk-moth larva, feeding on willow, in Glynhafod. Yesterday (21st) I relocated it and was amazed to see several pupal cases attached to its' body. I assume that these are of parasitic larvae that have emerged wrom within the moth larva. The Hawk-moth larva was still alive and feeding, though probably won't survive. The photos show the same larva, eight days apart.

My efforts at home [Pwll, Carms] proved to be a damp squib - or rather a very wet one! The MV trap had c 1" of rain in it, sodden moths all around [though one fresh large ranunculus] and a connecter came loose on the actinic. Silver y`s were the only migrant.
Ian Morgan <ikmorgan@msurf.net>Mon Sep 15 17:50:48 2008

Unfornately we weren't able to get any traps to the coast, but did run the garden trap. 2 specimens of the scarce migrant Tebenna micalis were the highlight, these being new for the county. 8 Silver Y were the only other migrants. 28 spp total.

Tebenna micalis
`Over the border` [Pwll, Llanelli,Carms]- there have been small numbers of silver y`s about for the last few days. I`d read Barry`s comments below about two hours ago and settled down to watching TV. Later on, looking out of the window at abou 7.45pm, I noticed that there were several silver y`s nectaring at an exotic Mexican plant in a pot by that window and, on walking down the garden, counted no less than 41 on various flowers [esp the N American Eupatorium purpureum `Jo-Pye Weed`]. By now it was too dark to set up my `mobile` actinics away from home, but I`ve set one up in my garden as well as an MV....so must wait now until the morning! Certainly, these silver y`s were not around in such numbers until today.
Ian Morgan <ikmorgan@msurf.net>Sun Sep 14 20:00:03 2008
70+ Silver Y and a few Rush Veneer seen whilst walking across the down, so I guess there's a good chance of a more interesting migrant or two being around. Hopefully run a trap or two tonight...

Just to highlight the problems with using the palps as an identification feature, here are two of Tony's specimens from the 27th August. The one on the right has a very faint suggestion of the pale front to the palps, but it's not at all obvious. The only reliable feature is the underside of the hindwing, and this should be checked in all cases, and if it can't be seen the please record it as Copper Underwing agg.

Out of county: at Pendine on 2 August, some 60 species despite a windy night, included grass eggar, white-speck, Webb's wainscotand Archer's dart. Trapping in the garden over the last week has produced l;arge numbers of individuals, but relatively few species. Rivulet and six-striped rustic were new for the garden. Also new were Numonia advenella, gold triangle, and garden pebble, as it's my first summer of pyralids. Finally, I checked a horsechestnut at Ynysforgan (SS683998) whose leaves appeared to have been mined.

Can I suggest that we all make an effort to inspect any Horse-chestnut trees over the next month or so to look for signs of the Horse-chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameraria ohridella). Please post any results here, positive or negative, and I'll map them. To date we have 12 Glamorgan records, mostly Cardiff, but also Swansea, Merthyr and Aberdare. Also check out http://www.leafmines.co.uk/ to see the results of the national monitoring scheme for this species. It also shows you some nice images of what to look for for.

`Over the border` [Carms]:Sat night - had 2 4-spotted footmen at Pwll [just W of Llanelli]; southern wainscots, small rufous and both double kidneys and olive in wet pastures/reedbeds/fen nr Llwynhendy [not far from WWT Penclacwydd]; also a pristine crescent dart and a double lobed just a few hundred yards from where Barry Stewart had them over 10 years ago [when he lived in the area]. Last night [Mon] targeted aspen for small chocolate tips nr Five Roads, Llanelli, but no luck - but compensation in the form of 2 scalloped hook tips [birch also nearby] in a sodden trap.

2 MV traps run at Llanrhidian last night produced over 2000 moths of 95 species, a large proportion of which were Smoky Wainscot. I gave up counting after 500, but estimated a minimum of 1400 of this species were in the traps! Other species in good numbers included ~100 Large Yellow Underwing, ~80 Least Yellow Underwing, ~70 Common Rustic, 60 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, ~50 Dingy Footman and ~50 Flame Shoulder. Noteworthy species were limited but included Agriphila selasella, Small Blood-vein, Brussels Lace, Rosy Footman, Four-spotted Footman, Dog’s-tooth, Southern Wainscot, Double Kidney, Bulrush Wainscot, Webb’s Wainscot, Small Rufous and Oak Bush-cricket.

Large Red-eyed Damselflies were found independently at two new sites in the Vale of Glamorgan on Sunday 27th. Rob & Linda Nottage found three at Dyffryn Bach Lake (ST 062 785). On the same afternoon I found 4 (including a mating pair) at Hensol Lake. If you plan to view these insects remember two things.....look only on & around the lily pads & take a pair of binoculars as they can be a bit distant. These two new sites take the known number up to three following discovery of the species at Cardiff Bay Wetlands in 2006.

First Harlequin Ladybird sighting in my garden over the weekend - I'm sure it won't be the last. Also I've been surprised to see how heavily infested the horse chestnuts around Cardiff are with the chestnut leaf miner (C. ohridella) - trees as far out as St Fagans with many mines on each leaf.

Set the laudry basket trap for the first time in my sister's suburban Surbiton Garden (Vc17) the last two nights with good effect (a couple of bricks in the bottoms solves the instability issue!): Highlights included 400+ Horse-chestnut Leaf-miners (all Horse-chestnut trees in the area are brown as they're completely infested with mines), 3 Gelechia senticetella (a micro following in the footsteps of Cypress Carpet), 2 European Corn-borer, Assara terebrella, 20+ Least Carpet, Cypress Carpet, perhaps most bizarre 2 Hoary Footman (a sp. of sw coasts), Toadflax Brocade, 6 Tree-lichen Beauty and 20+ Harlequin Ladybirds (seems they're very well established in Surrey).

Want to find a dark spinach? Well, they`re out now in Carms. Find yourself a good patch of chenopods [goosefoot, oraches etc]and set your actinic. 8 to a trap last night at Morfa, S of Llanelli. Good places for chenopods are horsey pastures [nr dungheaps, and horses do n`t eat them], wasteground on richer soils or upper saltmarshes. Barry Stewart has badgered me to submit any records of note from `across the border` in Carmarthenshire, so I better had! As with others, rather a lousy year, but in the middle of the current week numbers have picked up. Had 4-spotted footmen [two lots of male and female] at two sites just west of Llanelli [at Pwll-Burry Port] and a harlequin ladybird [new to Carms] also in the trap on the same date that Barry reported one on Gower -perhaps part of the same dispersal? Also in my trap were no less than 16 orange ladybirds - 20 years ago this was a scarce species of damp woodland in Carms. Tried the Carb. Lst. outcrops on Mynydd Du [approx NW of Ammanford], last night but a bit disappointing, though northern rustics and galium carpets amongst commoner uplanders such as antlers and true lover`s knots.

For all you DIY moth'ers I discovered the ultimate lightweight, portable moth trap catching box in M&S on the weekend - the collapsible washing basket, which at only £5 has to be worth a try! It even has a round hole in the top that an MV funnel sits in perfectly. The only downside I can see is that it will need some suport to stop it blowing over as it's so light (perhaps guying the handles might work, or possibly even suspend it?). It should in any case be good for trips abroad.

A reminder to all that I'll be running a GMRG field meeting at Dare Valley country park, this coming Saturday. Meet in the main visitor centre car park at 21:00. Only access the park by the entrance off the A4233 Aberdare to Maerdy road (along Highland place). The park is signposted from the A4233. The weather isn't looking ideal, but I'm working on getting permission to use a huge open porch as a standby site, so that a trap could be run in the event of inclement weather. You are welcome to your own traps at the meeting.
