Ran the garden actinic, in the terrible weather overnight (22.50mm of rain), for the Garden Moth Survey and got just one moth: a Yellow-line Quaker. Spurred on by Paul Parsons, I went out and eventually found some Hemp Agrimony and a couple of Adaina microdactyla mines. Thanks paul.

Mike CramMon Nov 3 19:14:58 2008
Best catch for a few weeks last night, after a milder night at last. Singletons of seven species: Spruce Carpet, Common Marbled Carpet, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Blair's Shoulder-knot, Angle Shades, Emmelina monodactyla and Leek moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella). I've had several of the latter this year - apparently they've become a pest at the nearby allotments.

I took a lunchtime stroll around Aberdare cemetery (SN 985 041), today, and found mines of Cameraria ohridella, on Horse Chestnut, and on Holm Oak I found Stigmella suberivora (two mines) and Phyllonorycter messaniella (hundreds). `Over the border` [Carms] - a single feathered ranunculus at the home trap [Pwll, Llanelli] was the first for me of this probably under-recorded vc44 species. Nothing much else in traps recently.
Ian Morgan <ikmorgan@msurf.net>Sun Oct 19 9:40:44 2008
A bit of a drive around the Cynon and Taff valleys resulted in larvae of Bucculatrix thoracella being found in Abercynon and Merthyr Tydfil town. Also in Merthyr town, on an old Holm Oak, were mines of Phyllonorycter messaniella and Stigmella suberivora. At Tyle Haidd, to the North of Merthyr Tydfil, I found what appears to be Phyllonorycter acerifoliella on a veteran Acer campestre and nearby I found a geometrid larva on my sleeve. I posed it on a bracken stem to photograph. I'm useless at identifying larvae and hopeless at using Porter, but I think it might be Lunar Thorn. If anyone knows better, please let me know.

Only two species to the garden actinic, last night: Spruce Carpet (4) and a Red-line Quaker. Another leaf mine found on the 16th was Phyllonorycter platanoidella on Norway Maple, at Bwllfa Dare.

Couldn't post this yesterday (no internet connection) so adding it now. Feeding damage and one larva of Bucculatrix thoracella found on the 16th, on a Lime in the churchyard of St Lleurwg's church, Hirwaun (SN 9582 0565).
Mark EvansCwmbach, Fri Oct 17 21:25:18 2008
A whistle stop inspection of Horse Chestnuts in Aberffrwd cemetary, Mountain Ash (ST 0496 9965) resulted in one mine of Cameraria ohridella being found. The Horse Chestnuts had lost most of their leaves and most of those that remained were already yellow, making searching for leaf mines particularly difficult. I also checked some of the Limes, there, in the limited time left, for Bucculatrix thoracella and found two leaves with typical feeding damage. Ran the garden actinic trap overnight and recorded nine species, including my first November moth. agg, and Yellow-line Quaker of the season.

Checking for Cameraria ohridella, I found mines in Llwydcoed (SN 989 050) and Plasdraw (SO 0097 0270), they being particularly abundant at the latter site. I also checked the limes in St John's churchyard for Bucculatrix thoracella and found two larvae, plus feeding damage and mines. If you are thinking of looking for B. thoracella, the larvae are tiny.

A Merveille du Jour was the highlight of the nine species in my garden trap, this morning. I checked the Horse Chestnuts in Victoria park (ST 155 769) and Thompson park (ST 161 771), Canton, for Cameraria ohridella. I had limited time, but had a reasonably thorough search if the accessible leaves. The results were: Victoria park- none found. Thompson park- a few mines found but not abundant.

Eight species last night to the garden MV including a late Willow Beauty and two Blair's Shoulder-knot. On Monday night I had a fresh Golden-rod Pug (confirmed by dissection) - new for the garden and very late in the year, possibly a third generation individual.

If you've got a Lime tree near you, then check it out for Bucculatrix thoracella. This species initially forms a small mine, but then feeds externally, making a very characteristic damage. The larvae themselves can often be seen at this time of year dangling on silken threads from the tree. We have remarkably few records despite the fact that I am certain it is present on every Lime tree in the county.

Ten species in the trap, this morning: Epiphyas postvittana (2), Eudonia angustea (1), Red-green Carpet (3), Common Marbled Carpet (2), Spruce Carpet (9), Black Rustic (2), Blair's Shoulder-knot (1), Green-brindled Crescent (1), Lunar Underwing (1) and Angle Shades (1). It has been the rule, this year, that the Garden Moth Survey catches (Fridays) have been consisently the lowest of the week, which has also highlighted that we seem to get the worst weather of the week on Fridays and the weekend more often than would be expected from mere coincidence alone. Anyone else noticed this?

I have failed to find any Horse-chestnut leaf-miner mines at recently checked sites in Gower, so still in the early stages of colonisation I guess; still only one West Glamorgan record so far. Firethorn Leaf-miner seems quite well established though, but still finding plenty of non-affected plants.

A trip to Cardiff Heliport foreshore at the weekend confirmed that Coleophora silenella is managing to hang on to it's status as a welsh species, but I only found a single larval case. Also, just up the coast on the Rhumney Estuary were leaf mines of Bucculatrix maritima (first for East Glamorgan), and an as yet undetermined Scrobipalpa - most likely salinella.

On the 13th, I found a Poplar Hawk-moth larva, feeding on willow, in Glynhafod. Yesterday (21st) I relocated it and was amazed to see several pupal cases attached to its' body. I assume that these are of parasitic larvae that have emerged wrom within the moth larva. The Hawk-moth larva was still alive and feeding, though probably won't survive. The photos show the same larva, eight days apart.

My efforts at home [Pwll, Carms] proved to be a damp squib - or rather a very wet one! The MV trap had c 1" of rain in it, sodden moths all around [though one fresh large ranunculus] and a connecter came loose on the actinic. Silver y`s were the only migrant.

Tebenna micalis
`Over the border` [Pwll, Llanelli,Carms]- there have been small numbers of silver y`s about for the last few days. I`d read Barry`s comments below about two hours ago and settled down to watching TV. Later on, looking out of the window at abou 7.45pm, I noticed that there were several silver y`s nectaring at an exotic Mexican plant in a pot by that window and, on walking down the garden, counted no less than 41 on various flowers [esp the N American Eupatorium purpureum `Jo-Pye Weed`]. By now it was too dark to set up my `mobile` actinics away from home, but I`ve set one up in my garden as well as an MV....so must wait now until the morning! Certainly, these silver y`s were not around in such numbers until today.
